Balkan Beat Box & Lamajamal
Bringing together a diverse group of artists that features members of FIREWATER and GOGOL BORDELLO, BALKAN BEAT BOX honors their Mediterranean roots with a hybrid style of dancehall hip hop and Jewish klezmer music. This exotic fusion of styles has earned them much attention, with the Chicago Sun-Times stating, "instead of gazing into the navels of other cultures, these mélanges pull the whole weight of the world forward, always forward." SAT September 13, 2008
@ Victory Gardens Biograph Theater - 2433 N. Lincoln Avenue, Chicago, IL
Show starts @ 8:00 p.m., doors open at 7:00 p.m.
Radio M
host Tony Sarabia is joined on-stage by World Music Festival’s Mike
Orlove for a taste of this year’s Festival, with Indian Classical music
by Habib Wardack & Puran Vyas, and performances by Mar Caribe
and Lamajamal, the night will include conversations with the musicians
and a special one-night-only collaboration.
The evening will begin with Indian Classical music by Habib Wardack, playing the rubab - a lute-like musical instrument from Afghanistan - and Puran Vyas, playing the tablas - a popular Indian percussion instrument. Then Mar Caribe will take the stage, they combine Spaghetti Western, gypsy jazz, and bluegrass with a mildly tropical twist. Next, Lamajamal
will bring an Eastern influenced sound to the stage – incorporating
sounds from Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Peru, and Spain, the band says
their dedicated to the survival of traditional music and the creation
of creative, soulful world music. Between them the diversity of
Chicago's World Music Festival will be exemplified! But before it’s
all over, get ready for a true world music experience as everyone
returns to the stage for a group performance you won’t soon forget.
After
the Preview, plan to join Tony Sarabia for a special treat – head
across the street to Soirée (2438 N Lincoln Ave) where he’ll be
spinning some of his favorite music from around the world, just for
you. It’s like listening to Radio M – only live!
